Wisconsin Flag
State Flag of Wisconsin
Although Wisconsin had been admitted into the Union in 1848, it was not until 1863 that the State adopted a flag, when the State Legislature passed a resolution to standardize a flag to be carried by Wisconsin regiments in the Civil War. The design consisted of the State Coat of Arms centered on a blue background.

The design was codified in State Law in 1913, but many citizens of the State were not entirely satisfied with the design and over the years, the dissatisfaction grew. The problem was that it was difficult to identify which state the flag represented, so in 1979, a large "WISCONSIN" in white letters was added across the top and the date, "1848", the year Wisconsin was admitted to the Union, was added below.
